Environmental Studies at St. Lawrence University examines the interrelationships of the physical sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, and humanities to explore issues affecting the Northern NY and Adirondack region, the nation and global biosphere.
Students in Environmental Studies design their education experience around core courses in policy, management and sciences taught by department faculty, as well as courses in other academic disciplines at SLU. The seminar structure of many courses allows in-depth research on issues relevant to the unique region that is home to St. Lawrence, such as groundwater contamination, sustainable forest management, and bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants.
Field research and hands-on learning are critical components to Environmental Studies. The department’s 100-acre Ecological Sustainability Landscape offers opportunity to observe and experiment with a variety of natural and human systems. Students also engage in internships with government and private agencies to apply their knowledge to “real world” environmental problem-solving.
